What is Eczema?

Also known as Atopic dermatitis, eczema is characterized by itchy and red skin that is often reoccurring or chronic.

It has no cure and is not entirely understood in terms of what causes it. In fact, there may be several distinct causes that affect different individual sufferers in novel ways.

Symptoms of eczema

What is Eczema
  • Dry skin with moderate to severe itchiness, especially at night
  • Sometimes raised bumps will occur, often filled with a clear fluid
  • Red and irritated patches of skin
  • Over time the skin can become thick, cracked, and/or scaly

As many as 20% of children and 3% of adults have been affected by this skin condition. The cause of this skin condition is not well understood. It may be a result of a skin reaction to certain substances, a complex immune system malfunction, or it may even have genetic roots.

Conventional treatments can vary widely, often with mixed results for those suffering. Often the first medication that doctors will try are topical steroid creams such as corticosteroids.

Although it may seem harmless to apply topical steroids, they do in fact have several known side effects, particularly when used over the long term. Atrophy, acne, delayed healing, changes in pigmentation, thin skin as well as suppression of the body’s normal adrenal functions are among some of the more concerning side effects of prolonged topical steroid use.

Moisturizing skin lotions can also help alleviate some of the symptoms of itchiness due to the dry skin associated with eczema. In other cases, avoiding certain triggers (once identified) can significantly reduce outbreaks in both frequency and severity.

One of the potential causes of eczema may well be impaired epidermal barrier function which can be caused by a number of factors, one of which has to do with enzymes known as lipids.

Can Cbd Help Eczema?

The skin’s natural endocannabinoid system may well play a critical role in regulating epidermal barrier functioning. Cannabinoids are known to be anti-inflammatory lipids and cannabinoid receptors are known to be involved in regulating the genes involved in lipid synthesis in the skin.

Some researchers believe that CBD offers a tremendous potential in terms of helping to better regulate natural skin processes in concert with the CB1 and CB2 receptors that have been shown to be active in overall skin health.

In addition to their potential to help address one or more causes of eczema, CBD is known to be very safe for use both orally and topically with few or no side effects for the vast majority of people.

Again, the research is still ongoing, and, the FDA has yet to approve a single non-synthetic cannabinoid-based topical therapy for medical skin conditions. If you plan to use CBD cream for eczema, talk with your doctor to make sure it will not interfere with other topical medications you may be taking for your condition.
