Are CBD products for beauty and healthy skin just a fad based on fiction?
In fact, the cannabinoids that are naturally found in the industrial hemp plant from which CBD oil is made have been found to be important in the function of healthy skin. They have anti-inflammatory, anti-aging, anti-oxidant, and anti-bacterial properties. In addition, the body’s natural endocannabinoid system seems to play a significant role in regulating the skin’s vital processes.
I want to help my readers learn more about the healing benefits of CBD, so this isn’t just a product review. I will also give you a brief round-up of some of the scientific research behind the properties that make CBD topicals a health trend that is not likely to disappear any time soon.

CBD Benefits for Skin Care
It might be tempting to dismiss CBD and skin care as just piggy backing on the known health benefits of CBD when consumed orally. However, you might be surprised to know that there are several researched backed ways in which CBD appears to have real potential benefits to your skin.
In fact, your skin has an endocannabinoid system of its own, and substances found naturally in hemp may well be critical to maintaining healthy skin function in a variety of ways.
Let’s take a closer look:
Anti-Inflammatory: The user of CBD applied topically to reduce inflammation has been well studied, although mostly in laboratory animals. However, the research seems promising that the transdermal (through the skin) anti-inflammatory properties that many users experience is not imagined.
Interestingly, CBD may play a special role in regulating sebaceous glands making sure their secretions are normal and protecting them from inflammation. This property of cannabidiol is one reason that it is currently being studied as a potential therapy for acne.
Anti-Oxidant: CBD is thought to be an anti-oxidant, which is thought to help combat the skin’s natural aging in response to UV exposure. If you are looking for a great anti-aging CBD cream, don’t miss my first top pick below!
Anti-Bacterial: Cannabidiol (CBD) is known to have anti-bacterial properties. It is even effective against some methicillin resistant forms of staph infection! This property can have benefits for overall skin health by making it less hospitable to the damaging effects of some infections, or skin problems related to bacteria, such as acne.
Moisturizing: The endocannabinoid system in your skin is responsible for regulating several key functions, including the production of lipids that are used to keep the skin moisturized. In fact, some researchers are beginning to look at cannabinoids as a topical treatment for eczema, a serious skin condition characterized by extremely dry skin.
Will Cbd Topicals Get Me High?
No. There are some products made with what is called a full-spectrum of the cannabinoids found in cannabis, including some trace amounts of THC, the main psychoactive chemical found in hemp. However, by law, CBD products have less than .3% of this chemical component, which is an insignificant amount to cause any high.
Even if you are worried about a drug test at work, it is very unlikely that using CBD topicals will trigger a positive test result. However, if you are very concerned about that, be sure to look for a “CBD Isolate” base to use for any skin care products infused with CBD.
How Much Cbd Should I Use?
The answer depends on both the product you choose (concentrations are different for different creams, salves and lotions) and also what effect you are going for. For example, a lotion designed for moisturizing a large area is designed to go on in a very thin layer and is likely less concentrated with a thinner base.
On the other hand, a salve designed for blemish control is likely more concentrated and takes only a pinhead sized amount applied to a small area for the product to be effective.
Your best bet is to follow the instructions that come with your product as a guide. Because cannabidiol is safe and non-narcotic, you don’t have to worry about using too much.
Do make sure to read the full ingredient to make sure you are not allergic to anything in the cream before using a large amount. In addition, pregnant and nursing women should not use CBD creams until more research demonstrates its safety under those conditions.
Can I Use Cbd Oil Right on My Skin?
In most cases, yes. Just check the ingredients first to make sure you do not have an allergy to any of the added ingredients including the carrier oil and/or flavorings used. In fact, this is usually the most economical way to use CBD topically. (If you go this route, be sure to check out my review for the best CBD tinctures here.) LINK WHEN AVAILABLE
However, there are a few downsides to going that route:
First, the oil form of CBD (also known as tinctures) usually does not have additional ingredients to support the reason you are using it topically. For example, it may lack the soothing power of aloe, the cooling power of peppermint, or the added anti-bacterial properties of tea tree oil. So, CBD oil alone may not give you all of the benefits of CBD topicals formulated with a special purpose in mind.
Second, it is more difficult to evenly spread the oil out of a tincture than it is a salve, cream or lotion. So, you might end up with an uneven coat, or end up using way more than you thought to cover the same area.
How to Know Which Cbd Cream is Legit?
Well this is a great question. Right now, CBD products have a huge demand that is outpacing supply. In fact, some of the top companies actually do run out of stock from time to time as they try to keep pace with consumer demand for this natural supplement.
These are the perfect market conditions for scams, including products that contain little or no actual CBD, low quality products full of residual pesticides or solvents, and companies that are just taking the money and running.
But there are some very trustworthy companies out there. I have spent hundreds of hours researching the best and worst CBD companies out there and I have a full review of each company (not just the good ones either!) linked to each of the product reviews below so you can see for yourself why I am happy to recommend these particular products from trustworthy manufacturers.
Moving on to the reviews, here are my top picks:
My Top Pick CBD Skin Care Products
Cannabidiol Life – Best Anti-Aging CBD Face Serum
Cannabidiol Life – CBD Anti-Aging Facial Serum
One of the most trusted manufacturers of CBD products is Cannabidiol Life. This CBD face cream is definitely one to be aware of if you are looking to take advantage of the natural anti-oxidant and anti-aging properties of CBD.
To use the serum, you just place a few drops on your hands, rub together, and very gently pat the face and neck area after you have finished your daily facial cleanse. A little bit goes a very long way, making this a bit more reasonably priced than you might think at first glance.
As discussed above, CBD may have its own anti-aging properties since it is an anti-oxidant. Plus the additional all-natural ingredients in this serum really boost its anti-wrinkle properties, including: argon, jojoba, rosehip seed, buckthorn seed and carrot seed oils. It also includes a healthy dose of vitamin E, sandalwood, frankincense and tamanu.
Available Strengths: 50mg/ounce full spectrum, tincture
Highland Pharms – Best CBD for Dry and Itchy Skin
Highland Pharms – Therapy + CBD Lotion
Highland Pharms is one of my favorite CBD companies because of the care they put into delivering one of the most robust full spectrum hemp oils available on the market. (For my full company review, look here.)
This is a high concentration lotion dispensed from a small pump bottle for convenience. It is great for covering larger areas of the body such as arms, legs or the back. It is a smooth and non-greasy formula which quickly absorbs into the skin.
Like the other products available at Highland Pharms, they give careful attention to ingredients and this formula contains the moisturizing benefits of unrefined cocoa and coconut oils. It’s also packed with essential oils for those that are into the natural healing properties of these plant extracts: Chamomile, Eucalyptus, Rosemary and Peppermint.
Available Strengths: 100mg/oz. full spectrum CBD
Scent: Light hint of rosemary
CBDISTILLERY – Best CBD Cream for Blemishes
CBDISTILLERY – CBDefine Skin Care Cream
If you are looking for a very potent CBD oil for spot treatment on blemishes, this is a nice option. The anti-inflammatory properties of this full spectrum CBD oil are combined with the moisturizing properties of apricot, sunflower, olive and coconut oils. It also has the anti-bacterial properties of tea tree oil.
This cream also has the light scent of frankincense and lavender. The manufacturer recommends applying it in the morning and at night, and don’t worry, a little goes a long way.
Available Strengths: 500mg/oz. full spectrum CBD
Koi – Best Value CBD Lotion
Koi – Lavender CBD Lotion
One of the problems that some folks may find with some of the other CBD topicals on the market is that they are very concentrated and are mostly designed for use as a targeted topical on a small area of the skin. Thus, they can be pricey when calculated per ounce of product.
However, this offering by Koi comes in at a lower concentration, but a higher volume of lotion, making it a breeze to cover larger areas of the skin on a daily basis. It also comes in at an excellent price, making it my top pick for overall value in this category.
Despite being reasonably priced, the ingredient list includes what you would expect to see in a high-end natural healthy skin lotion such as aloe leaf juice, jojoba seed oil, white willow bark and neem seed oil. The lovely lavender scent is not overpowering, but rather has a light, delicate and fresh smell.
Available Strengths: 48mg/oz. CBD Isolate
Conclusion: Find the Best CBD Beauty Products
The health benefits of CBD include several perks for healthy skin. Combined with other natural ingredients, CBD infused with cannabidiol from hemp can help some people with anti-aging, blemish control, acne, and moisturizing.
